The short version: Looking for motorcycle rides in Santa Monica? You’re parked at the start of the best coast ride in California. Pacific Coast Highway runs north from here to Malibu, Topanga Canyon climbs into the Santa Monica Mountains a few minutes inland, and Mulholland rides the ridge above the whole thing. The roads are easy to find. The hard part is finding people to ride them with. That’s what RideWolf is for.

If you keep a bike in Santa Monica, you’re parked right at the trailhead of some of the best riding in the country. When people hunt for motorcycle rides in Santa Monica, what they’re really talking about is the coast run: Pacific Coast Highway rolling north along the water toward Malibu, plus Topanga Canyon climbing off the beach into the mountains, and Mulholland riding the ridge above it all. Ocean on one side, canyons on the other, and you don’t even have to touch a freeway to reach either one. It’s a rare spot: easy cruising and real twisties both start at your front door.

The coast run starts here. The crew is the missing piece

Straight with you: I started riding at 50, over here in LA, and the west side is where I learned the coast. PCH north out of Santa Monica was one of the first roads I felt truly comfortable on, usually with my buddy Leo out front. I found my crew early, through family, and it changed the whole thing.

Most riders don’t get that head start. They’ve got the bike and the best beginner coast road in the county thirty seconds from the driveway, and no one to ride it with. So they head up PCH solo on a Saturday, hoping to fall in with a friendly group at Neptune’s. It’s a strangely lonely thing for a ride this good, and nobody really says it out loud. RideWolf is me handing every west-side rider what I stumbled into, without the club, the cold calls, or the luck.

The west-side roads to point the bars at

This is where Santa Monica riders point the bars. These are the roads we actually run, and the best places to ride a motorcycle near you all fan out from this one stretch of coast.

The coast. This is the one. Pacific Coast Highway north out of Santa Monica toward Malibu is the ride everybody starts with: gentle curves, ocean on your right, and a relaxed pace where you can actually breathe. Keep going to the county line and roll up to Neptune’s Net, where a hundred bikes park on a Saturday. It’s the friendliest scenic ride in the whole basin.

The canyons. Turn inland and Topanga Canyon (CA-27) climbs straight off the coast into the Santa Monica Mountains, curvy, scenic, and the closest real canyon to the west side. Topanga runs you up to Mulholland, and from there you can link into Mulholland Highway, the stretch riders call “The Snake,” a tree-tunnel of S-curves that’s the classic LA Sunday run. If you’ve got the chops, Latigo Canyon off PCH packs something like 160 turns into ten miles.

The ridge. Mulholland Drive rides the spine above the city with the ocean on one side and the Valley on the other. From Santa Monica you’re minutes from the western end of it: an easy, scenic cruise that connects the coast to the canyons without ever dropping into traffic.

The ride What it is ~Length Skill Where to meet
PCH north to Malibu Easy ocean cruising — the coast run starts here ~20 mi Beginner Neptune’s Net
Topanga Canyon (CA-27) Closest real canyon — coast up to the crest ~18 mi Intermediate Off PCH / the Valley
Mulholland Drive Ridge-top cruise between ocean and Valley varies Intermediate Western end, off Topanga
Mulholland “The Snake” Tight tree-tunnel S-curves, the classic Sunday run ~3 mi Advanced The Rock Store
Latigo Canyon ~160 turns in ten miles — for experienced riders ~10 mi Advanced Off PCH, Malibu

One thing to know before you climb: our canyons close. Fire, rain, and rockslides shut Topanga and the Mulholland roads down without much warning, so check LA County road closures before you commit to a route up the mountain.

That’s how it’s always worked, and RideWolf just means you don’t have to get lucky to find your group.
