Agoura Hills is the last town before the mountains stop pretending to be suburbs. Drive west on Mulholland and the ranch fences take over. Point the bars south on Kanan and you are through the first tunnel before the radio finishes a song. The motorcycle rides in Agoura Hills are the ones the rest of Los Angeles County treats as a destination, which is a strange thing to live inside of. Thousands of riders come through here every weekend. Almost none of them are your neighbours, and by four in the afternoon they have all gone home.
I ride most weekends with Leo and the guys, and I got my crew through pure family luck. My sister-in-law knew riders, they took me in when I started at 50, and none of that was something I earned. I think about that every time I hear from a rider who has done everything right and still rides alone.
Agoura Hills has its own version of the problem. This is not a town short on motorcycles. It is a town where the motorcycles belong to somebody else. They roll in off the 101 on Sunday morning, stack up on Cornell, run the Snake a few times, and then filter back east toward the Valley and the basin. You wave at forty riders and know none of them. Monday the roads are yours again, gloriously empty, and there is still nobody to ride Encinal with on a Tuesday evening.
Here is what is actually out your door. These are the real places to ride a motorcycle around Agoura Hills, and the west end gives you something Calabasas and the Valley cannot: roads that get quieter the further you go.
The run to the sea. Kanan Dume Road is the Agoura Hills artery and one of the most enjoyable stretches of pavement in the county. Twelve miles of wide, well-sighted sweepers carry you from the 101 through three tunnels and down to Pacific Coast Highway at Point Dume. It is fast without being technical, which makes it the rare canyon road you can hand to a newer rider without worrying. Ride it south for breakfast at the coast, come back north when the marine layer burns off.
The serious one. Decker Canyon, signed as CA-23, drops off Mulholland in a sequence of genuine hairpins with grades that touch ten percent and very little between you and the hillside. It has a reputation as one of the deadliest roads in California and it earns it. Ride it in daylight, ride it well within yourself, and if you are still building confidence, get the fundamentals properly sorted before you take it on.
The one you will have to yourself. Encinal Canyon runs roughly parallel to Decker and gets a fraction of the traffic. Same drop to the coast, longer and more flowing, with ranch gates and oak shade most of the way down. When the Snake is a circus on a Sunday, Encinal is where you go to actually ride.
The back way west. Potrero Road out past Lake Sherwood into Hidden Valley is horse country, not canyon country. Long open bends through white fences and old money, no tourists, no drama. It is the best low-stress evening loop in the area and it links neatly into Westlake if you want to stretch it.
The famous three miles. Yes, the Snake is right there too, where Mulholland tightens into tree-tunnel S-curves above The Rock Store. It is advanced, it has no run-off, and it collects crashes every season. Treat it as a road to grow into rather than a road to prove something on.

One honest note before you commit to a loop out here. These canyons close often, and the west end closes hardest: fire damage, rockfall, and long repaving jobs have shut sections of Mulholland, Decker, and Encinal in recent years. Check LA County road closures first, because there is no quick detour once you are past Kanan.
Most towns would be thrilled to have one landmark rider stop. Agoura Hills has the two that everybody else drives out to reach, and they sit within a mile of each other on Cornell Road with an Agoura Hills address. The Rock Store is the West Coast’s most famous motorcycle hangout, packed from around 8 on a Sunday morning and running through lunch. The Old Place is the opposite in every way: a tiny weathered storefront serving breakfast to riders for generations, and worth timing a ride around. Down at the bottom of Kanan, Neptune’s Net on PCH is the natural turnaround if you take the tunnels to the coast. The scenic motorcycle rides near you all pass one of those three doors. Kanan Dume Road runs twelve miles and three tunnels down to PCH, Decker and Encinal canyons drop off Mulholland to the coast, Potrero Road loops out through Lake Sherwood, and the Snake sits above The Rock Store on Cornell. Every one of them starts within about ten minutes of the 101.

It is wide, well sighted, and flows in long sweepers rather than tight hairpins, so you can build confidence at your own pace and still get a proper ride to the ocean. Decker packs tight hairpins and grades approaching ten percent into under five miles, with very little run-off and few guardrails. Ride it in good light, well inside your limits, and never at the pace of somebody in front of you that you do not know.
